Hello again! I am making the **first** blog update lol. Kev and I were sitting in the living room today watching some Monday night football while the cats and Isabel played on the floor! The cats were being brats and knocking the Christmas tree all around. Eventually, a bulb came loose off the tree and the cats played with it for awhile. Then, Isabel noticed a shiny blue sparkly toy on the floor....got up on her hands and knees and crawled to it!

Who knew that she could crawl! All this time she has been army crawling all over....then today - magic!

Isabel's entry to our great big world!

Isabel...6 minutes old!
Isabel Rose Poenisch entered this world fast and furious on May 10th, 2009. Here is her birth story...

Friday, May 8th, 2009
I had woken up for the second morning in a row, unable to sleep. I had some extreme swelling in my ankles and feet. On Thursday I decided to give it until Friday to see if it would resolve itself, but it did not. So I called labor and delivery first thing in the morning to express my concern. I was 38 wks pregnant. Labor and delivery decided that it would be best for me to see the Dr. that morning, and told me that if I was unable to get in to see my OB, that I should just come to the hospital for monitoring. I went onto work - I was scheduled to work 7a - 1:30p - and let my boss know that I was going to have to call the clinic when it opened and go to the dr. that am. When I called the clinic the receptionist wanted to make me an apt at 2p, but I was insistent that I be seen in the am. The plan was to go to the dr., see what was going on, then go back to work and stay a bit late to make up for missed time. I did not have an actual appointment, but was assured that my OB would see me between patients.
After I got off the phone with the clinic, I called Kev and told him I would go to the dr. at 9 and let him know what was going on. This was the only apt ever, throughout my entire pregnancy, that Kevin did not come to. When my nurse took me back she listened to my concerns and then took my blood pressure. It was fairly high, and remained high the 3 subsequent times she took it. It was around 147/96. A urinalysis was taken and it came back +1 - which is 'suggestive' of pre-eclampsia. My legs and ankles still resembled tree trunks. My OB decided at that point that it would be best for me to go to labor and delivery for monitoring to see if I needed to deliver that day. So I got on the phone to Kevin and told him I though he should probably come to the hospital...as the dr. thought I might be induced shortly. Kev, in fine form (completely nervous about the impending delivery) rushed to the hospital and called Chris - my sister who was in town - to let her know that we would not be coming home, but that she could come to the hospital.
Isabel and I spent some time being monitored and she was fine. Good movement and good heartbeat....I was not contracting at all, and as long as I laid on my left side, my blood pressure was ok. However, my blood work came back not so good. My platelets were fairly low. There was some murmuring about me staying at the hospital, but in the end it was decided that I could go home for the night, but only if I returned directly following my collegiate graduation (which happened to be the very next day!) My OB would not, however, let me go back to work.
So I called work and let them know that I needed to start my leave and went home to rest, relieved that I would be making it through graduation. We were also excited to see our family - both sides were coming in for my graduation, and we were excited that our little one would soon be in our arms!

Graduation went well - I looked massive in my 53 in black gown! I got my wonderful husband to take me to Burger King for lunch and off we went to the hospital! Monitoring went pretty much the same - super high blood pressure unless I was on my left side, still swollen, protein the same, BUT my platelets dropped further. Because I was, at that point, showing indicators of HELLP, pre-eclampsia, and my blood was getting less and less good as time went on, my OB decided to induce. It looked like 5.9.09 would be the big day! I was started on Cytotech around 2p, and then time began to crawl. Our darling daughter was not thrilled with the aspect of living outside my uterus, and my body agreed with her! Kevin and his dad, Phil, went golfing, while all my most important women watched a chick flick with me in my room. Eventually that night, my nurses booted the extended family because my blood pressure was out of control - around 160/110. I was finally starting to contract, and feel pain. It was not too bad until around 10:30p. I started to be in a lot of pain, and it became clear that if I was going to get an epidural, it was time. The anesthetitian was called, and he dosed me up. It was terrifying for me, but Kevin was absolutely fascinated! After that, I slept....SO great!

Mama's day! At about 6a, I was finally dilated to 5. We called our families first thing in the am to see if they would come by and visit before the day got started and they went off to church. My in laws - Phil and Cheryl - stopped by about 9:45a, and visited for a bit. I was starting to be in some serious pain again, as my epidural was running out, but I knew Phil and Cheryl would be off to church soon, so I just tried to enjoy the visit! They left about 10:20 for church and my mother and sisters called to say they would be by shortly. My nurse checked me and said I was at 8 (WOOT!) and my epidural was refilled. Kevin went to use the facilities maybe 5 minutes after I was declared an 8. My nurse was charting and all of a sudden, I felt the need to push. I told her I needed to push, so she checked me again, and said I was complete! She also urged me to NOT push until the Dr arrived. Kev came back to the room, and said, your mom is on her way. I told him to call her back and tell her to go to the waiting room! As he called her back, he tried to figure out where we were at in this process, and it took a minute for him to grasp the idea that Isabel was on her way NOW! About 10:30a, Dr. Chamales came running in, and said, you have NO idea how fast I drove to get her! The nurses had already brought the baby stuff in and broke down my bed for delivery, but as my OB gowned up, the nurse commented that she had forgotten the dr.'s stool. Dr. Chamales simply said that there was no time for that, and let me push. 10 minutes and 3 pushes later (now all you ladies hate me, right??? :-) Isabel Rose arrived in this world - pink and pissed off!
Kev stood by my side through all of it until the first push when the Dr said she was crowing. As soon as he saw his little girl's head, he abandoned me! I believe his exact, breathless words were, Keep pushing, baby - I can see her - she's almost out! On the second push, Isabel's head was out and ready to be suctioned. One more and the rest of her followed! They thrust her on my chest and I was absolutely amazed by the tiny little lady Kev and I had made! When she was about 2 minutes old, my care team let her daddy take her to the doorway to see my family, who arrived at the same time the dr. did.

She was 8lbs, 7oz of perfections, 20 inches long and nursed like a champ! We had a bit of an extended stay in the hospital due to some initial health issues, but we are both healthy now!
